Weekly Wednesday Wish List #270: Cozy Fall Finds I’m Loving

I’ve been thinking lately about how fast the seasons turn. The zucchini are still piling up on the counter, the garden is still full, but I have been burning a pumpkin spice candle for weeks now. Fall is knocking, and apparently so is my sense of restraint.

So here’s this week’s edition of the Wednesday wish list: the cozy things, the clever little things, the ones I keep telling myself I “might not need, but really will.”

The Bits I’m Loving

A woven pumpkin that looks like it wandered in from an antique shop. The shape alone made it worth it.

A wooden riser that doubles as a cookbook stand. My kitchen counter has officially found its best friend.

I’ve been re-burning this pumpkin spice candle every single evening (friends, if you want my code: Heidi20, 20% off your order).

And the easiest way to dress any kitchen or dining table I’ve seen lately. Five minutes, instant fall.

A curtain wood hutch I had to take a second look at. GORGEOUS is the only word that fits.

No real hydrangeas in the yard? This faux stem arrangement has been quietly fooling my whole street.

A candy jar shaped like a rooster. Cock-a-doodle-doo. Instant yes.

And an LED lamp whose shade I fell for before I’d even turned it on.

Little Tips Worth Stealing

When a room feels like it’s missing something but I can’t say what, it’s usually the space above the tall furniture. A pretty basket, a sculptural piece of pottery, anything on top of an armoire draws the eye up and makes the whole room feel finished.

In the evening, I’ve moved to lamps instead of overhead lights. The house gets softer, the day quiets down, and the family starts winding down without anyone asking.

And here’s one I’ve tested on my own droopy bunch: a dipped-in-water trick. Hydrangeas can actually drink through their petals, so a good cool soak will sometimes bring a flopping bloom back to life. No more pruning with regret.

What I’m Reading, Watching, Cooking

Three things everyone keeps clicking on: fall roundup posts at the big-box store, a free pack of autumn art prints, and a chat about when to actually start decorating.

From my kitchen: if your garden is in a zucchini situation like mine, three new ones in rotation. Mini-loaf zucchini bread, grilled-tasting zucchini in a honey-Dijon, and a light one-pot pasta in lemon butter ricotta. All very doable on a busy Tuesday night.

One pot potluck: because a casual outdoor get-together is the easiest way to eat. There’s a full walkthrough in the posts from theme to table setting, plus a free editable invitation set for subscribers.

On the gram: my ideal weekend is this, plus nowhere to be.

Quote of the week: “Your home is living space, not storage space.” — Francine Joy. I’m taking that personally.

Did you know: butterflies drink mineral water from the soil, so you can make a “watering spot” (shallow dish, some sand, water) and they’ll come find it.

The Questions That Answer Themselves

August feels too early for fall decor, but I’m done being summer. Help. Treat August like the middle. Tuck away the beach stuff, and let in the warmer neutrals, wood, and the green. Cozy comes, and summer doesn’t feel like it’s gone.

How long did the oldest goldfish in the world live? Forty-three years, and it still outlived me in the trivia sense. As for the food that never spoils: honey.

Wardrobe, Weekend, and Where It All Goes

For the closet I’m eyeing a game-day sweater for football season, a flare-sleeve tee, the gray blazer that got compliments all last year (and a new brown one now), a shirt with a satin tie, a utility jacket that made me poke at the collar, a bootcut jean, a polo that for some reason means fall to me, and a handbag in yellow plaid I want more than I’ll admit.

For the fall closet basics, I’m putting my money on a textured sweater (currently knit by over 40%), a long-sleeve baseball tee, my no-iron-needed shirt, the stretch slim jeans I keep buying, a soft cashmere sweater that’s not on sale but still worth it, stretch ponte pants in a few colors, and last week’s top-selling item.

For the home, a pinecone eucalyptus wreath for the mantel, glass pumpkins with sparkle, a woven jute vase for the branch, a wool rug in the softest colors, a swivel armchair, a scalloped-edge wall mirror, a pine end table, and a pair of heron prints.

A Small Note From Nora

Last year I was mid-renovation the whole time, so my “fall” was basically a wreath and a prayer. This year I’m doing it the easy way: the lamps, the neutrals, the green. If I can do it next week between the school pick-ups and the zucchini, it’s a keeper.

A Note from Nora

I cook, wander, and keep a small routine in Portland, Oregon. Everything here passed the Tuesday test — if I can make it on a Tuesday night, it’s a keeper.
